What is a Smokie?
The Arbroath Smokie is haddock, hot smoked over hardwood, using a specific process.
The Smokie has a protected status under European law (PGI status eg Champagne) which means that it can only be called an Arbroath Smokie if it is produced in the traditional specified manner and within a five mile radius of the small fishing town of Arbroath in the beautiful county of Angus in Scotland.
